Mother's Day

My goal was to finish this deck by Mother's Day

And, I made it - Here's remembering you, Mom!

From the deck you can see open fields with mounds on each side.

Those mounds are really stacks of vines that were removed by Piña Vineyard Management.

Those fields are being prepped for replanting.
We've been doing more vineyard redevelopment this year than last.
We think it's a good sign that the economy is improving.

Happy Mother's Day from the Piña brothers and staff!

Ranndy,

I'm curious about what the new grapes will be planted in place of the old and how often to grapevines have to be replaced?

Here in citrus country, a tree will be grafted over to a new variety. That will be done with stone fruit also.

Wish all the mothers in your life a wonderful day.

Grapevine rootstock is also grafted to the selected varietal. We don't manage the vineyards noted in the picture, so we don't know what variety will be planted there. Based on harvest information for last year, Napa's top 10 varieties in order are: Cab Sauv, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauv Blanc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cab Franc & Petit Verdot. If I had to pick a number for how often grapevines are replaced, on average I'd estimate 25 years, but it varies widely based on many factors. And some vines are still producing after 80 - 100 years.
